Una pasantía de investigación en el Departamento de Geofísica (DGF) realizaron las estudiantes de Ingeniería de la Escuela y Observatorio de Ciencias de la Tierra (École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre, EOST) de la Universidad de Estrasburgo, Francia, Charlotte Gidrol y Valentine Curt.
Las pasantes trabajaron durante ocho semanas bajo la supervisión de los académicos, Javier Ruiz y Eduardo Contreras-Reyes, en el análisis y modelamiento de tensores de momento de sismos ocurridos entre 2015 y 2019 en la región del Maule; y 2018 y 2022, en la zona del Huasco, respectivamente.
“El objetivo fue conocer qué ocurre o cómo es la actividad sísmica después un gran terremoto”, dijo Charlotte Gidrol.
Por su parte, Valentine Curt, afirmó que, a su juicio, el trabajo realizado fue interesante. “Nos pareció una buena oportunidad para investigar sobre un tema de sismología que será parte de un futuro artículo científico”, agregó.
Sobre la experiencia de trabajar como pasantes del Departamento de Geofísica de la Universidad de Chile, las estudiantes de la Universidad de Estrasburgo destacaron la buena acogida por parte de las y los investigadores del DGF y las similitudes entre las rutinas de trabajo de Chile y Francia.
“La forma de trabajar es, prácticamente, la misma que la de nuestro país, pero en Francia hay mayor cercanía entre investigadoras e investigadores. Por ejemplo, todas y todos se reúnen todos los días para almorzar y tomar café en la mañana y en la tarde”, relató Charlotte Gidrol.
Tras su pasantía de investigación en el DGF de la Universidad de Chile, Charlotte Gidrol y Valentine Curt regresarán a Francia para continuar con su cuarto y sexto año de estudios de Ingeniería en la EOST de la Universidad de Estrasburgo.

The engineering students from the École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (EOST), Charlotte Gidrol and Valentine Curt, worked in the analysis and modeling of moment tensors of earthquakes occurred in Maule and Huasco areas between 2015 and 2022.
Students from the École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (EOST) of the University of Strasbourg, France, Charlotte Gidrol and Valentine Curt, carried out a research internship at the Department of Geophysics (DGF) of the University of Chile.
The engineering students from EOST remained eight weeks in Santiago de Chile to work in the analysis and modeling of moment tensors of earthquakes that occurred between 2015 and 2019 in the Maule region; and between 2018 and 2022 in the Huasco area, respectively.
“We worked under the supervision of Javier Ruiz and Eduardo Contreras-Reyes. The objective was to know and show what happens or what seismic activity is like after a large earthquake,” said Charlotte Gidrol.
Valentine Curt stated that, in her opinion, the work they had to do was interesting. “It seemed like a good opportunity to investigate a seismology topic and collaborate on an issue that will be part of a scientific article,”, she said.
Regarding the experience of working as research interns in Chile, the students from the University of Strasbourg highlighted the good reception by the DGF researchers and the similarities with the work routine in France.
“The manner of work is practically the same, except for the fact that there is greater proximity between researchers in France. For example, they have lunch together and there are coffee times in the morning and in the afternoon,” said Charlotte Gidrol.
After their research internship at the DGF of the University of Chile, Charlotte Gidrol and Valentine Curt will continue with their sixth and fourth year in engineering studies at EOST.
